RETAIL GROWTH STRATEGY

A fresh look at Wagga Wagga'a retail potential is sweet news to the ears of retailers who have been calling for a coordinated approach between retail business and the Wagga Wagga City Council.

The Council has made a commitment to prepare a Retail Growth Strategy and is in the process of seeking quotations from suitably qualified companies for its preparation. The Council is particularly interested in engaging the retail sector to generate a Retail Strategy which achieves a balance between an economic based approach and a focus on sense of place and capacity building.

The Strategy will clearly identify the retail hierarchy and mix in Wagga Wagga and provide the basis for strengthening the different retail characters present in the retail sector in order to capture an increasing share of retail expenditure.

The Retail Strategy will be based on rigorous economic analysis of the retail sector and an in-depth understanding of the role of Wagga Wagga's retail sector both in the wider region and in Wagga Wagga's communities. The strategy will address the development of the sector in a way which meets the higher-order retail needs of the region and the local retail needs of our communities, so that retail expenditure is maximized and the proportion of retail expenditure leakage is progressively reduced. The strategy will provide the foundation for the development of the retail sector based on economic, social and environmental sustainability.

The objectives of this project are to:

  • Prepare a Retail Growth Strategy which will guide retail planning and development in the City for the next 15 years with short medium and long term milestones

  • The Retail Growth Strategy will have a focus on building retail character and sense of place at the City wide and precinct scale

  • To build capacity in the City's retail sector

  • Identify retail Character and retail mix

  • Qualify the quantum and type of new retail floor space that is supportable in Wagga using both existing retail strategic plans and new data that is available

  • Qualify the appropriate location and format of future retail development
